Rigg and Furrow

Rig and Furrow (or Ridge and Furrow) patterns are archaeological evidence of ancient cultivation. The pattern is the result of ploughing with non reversible ploughs over a period of many years. Since this ancient form of cultivation this area has been used only for grazing and has never been ploughed using modern machinery. In contrast land to the south of the B 6350 road is used for arable cultivation and the surface is much smoother, but the direction of travel of large modern agricultural machinery is quite obvious.
